Management Approach

Fundamental concept

By responding to environment issues including climate change, developing and promoting innovative technologies, and providing environmentally friendly products and services including natural gas, the Daigas Group strives to reduce the environmental impact of business activities. By harmonizing its business activities with the environment, the Group will create a sustainable society.

Environmental conservation on a local and a global scale is an extremely important mission for the Daigas Group, whose operations center on the energy business. Greenhouse gases in particular are a leading cause of climate change, which is a global issue with huge impact on society, ecosystems, and the world as a whole. Because emissions of greenhouse gases are a large part of the environmental impact caused by the business activities of the Daigas Group, we actively engage in taking appropriate measures. In accordance with our “Daigas Group Environmental Policy,” the Daigas Group makes efforts to lessen the environmental impact of its business activities and customers through the expansion of utilization of natural gas and renewable energies, the provision of environmentally friendly products and services. And through our business activities, we contribute to environmental improvement and the development of sustainable societies locally, nationally, and internationally by pursuing harmony with the environment and making efficient use of energy and resources.

Activity Indicator, Target, Plan, and Results

Activity indicator (Environmental Management Indicator): Environmental Management Efficiency

Third-party verification completed Osaka Gas underwent a third-party review by Bureau Veritas Japan Co., Ltd.

Osaka Gas uses “Environmental Management Efficiency” as an indicator to assess progress in environmental management in a continuous, integrated manner. This indicator is the total monetary value of seven environmental impacts* per gas produced. The smaller the figure for environmental management efficiency, the greater the reduction in environmental impact per amount of gas produced.

Major actions taken

Approach to reducing environmental impact to improve “Environmental Management Efficiency”

At our city gas terminals, we use systems for recovering LNG cold energy and utilizing it for power generation, including the cryogenic power generation facility put into operation at the Himeji LNG Terminal in March 2017. The stable operation of these systems has helped us reduce electricity procured from outside. However, in FY2021, a decline in city gas production output mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a decrease in the operation of the cryogenic power generation facilities at our LNG terminals and a resulting increase in electricity purchased from outside. As a result, our environmental management efficiency increased from the previous fiscal year but almost achieved the initial target. In our office buildings, our efforts to encourage efficient work styles and reduce overtime work hours resulted in a decrease in our energy consumption. Moreover, we used an environment management system (EMS) to involve all employees in efforts to reduce GHG emissions from the Group’s business activities.
